The Earth Sciences

are the focus of scientific understanding about this and other planets, embracing an enormous range of topics, including the evolution of the solar system, the earth, and life, the nature of planetary interiors, the causes of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, earth-surface processes and the origin and behaviour of oceans and atmosphere. The emphasis of both our teaching and research is on understanding the fundamental principles of geological processes. Theory, measurements, experiments, and observation of natural processes are all essential elements in the Earth Sciences, and students with a strong background in all aspects of the physical sciences are encouraged to join the Department.

Oxford is one of the leading centres of geological research in the UK, with a score of 3.2 in the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) research assessment exercise.

Welcome to the Faculty of Oriental Studies  (ASYA DILLERI MEDENIYYETI  OYRENME FAKULTESI)OXFORD ENGLAND

Welcome to the Faculty of Oriental Studies at the University of Oxford. Among subjects in the humanities, Oriental Studies is unique in introducing students to civilisations that are radically different from the Western ones that form the basis of the curriculum in most British schools and colleges. The courses present both the major traditions of the regions studied and, in most cases, their modern developments. All courses include language, literature, history and culture, and there are a wide range of options in such fields as art and archaeology, history, literature, philosophy, religion and modern social studies.The following are the principal areas of study:

Islamic World, Hebrew and Jewish Studies, Eastern Christianity, Egyptology and Ancient Near East, South and Inner Asia and East Asian Studies.

In additon to the above subject areas, a major benefaction from the Bukkyo Dendo Kyokai has fully endowed a new Chair of Buddhist Studies at Oxford. For more information please see the Buddhist Studies section of this website.

Oriental Studies has a long history in Oxford. The Bodleian and other libraries have acquired magnificent collections. The Oriental Institute, Institute for Chinese Studies, Bodleian Japanese and Indian Institute Libraries offer loan collections in their respective fields. Adjacent to the Oriental Institute is the Ashmolean Museum, which houses superb collections. The Sackler Library includes the principal library for Egyptology and Ancient Near Eastern Studies.

Most courses offer the opportunity to spend time in the region being studied. The Arabic course includes a year in the Middle East, the Persian and Turkish courses a year in Iran or Turkey respectively, the Hebrew course an optional year in Israel, and the Chinese course includes four months on a course of language study in East Asia. Students of Japanese spend the third term of their first year in Japan and may also spend an optional further year there between years 3 and 4 of the course, taking advantage of work placements and opportunities for further study at Japanese universities.

New Chemistry Teaching & Research Laboratory for Oxford (slide show)

Progress continues apace on the project which will see a new Chemistry building on South Parks Road.  The new building will provide, in conjunction with the Chemistry Research Laboratory, world class teaching and research facilities commensurate with Oxford Chemistry’s international standing and profile.

December 2010 saw the completion of RIBA Stage C (concept design) and submission of the planning application to Oxford City Council.  On the 14th December the University provided further support for the project approving £328K for infrastructure service diversions and enabling works and a further £1,182K to enable design work to continue to Stage D.  The total commitment by the University to the project  now amounts to £4,314,060.

Working with our architects, FJMT, stage D (detailed design & planning) will continue through Q1 and Q2 of this year and will see an increasing input from the Department’s User groups directly to the design team, while statutory approving authorities and other internal and external stakeholders will remain actively engaged in the process.
